Moonstone is a member of the feldspar group mineral orthoclase and consists of alternating layers of the minerals albite and orthoclase. When light hits between these layers, it scatters and appears to roll or billow across the gem, creating a phenomenon called adularescence. Moonstone's milky sheen resembles the effect of moonlight so much that it was believed in Hindu mythology to be made of moonbeams and bring good luck. Moonstone usually is colorless, white and bluish gray with white or blue adularescence. However the gem can come in other colors such as peach, yellow, and brown. Clean with warm, soapy water. Avoid use of ultrasonic and steam cleaner.
